Why is my cat scared of his recently washed caged?

I always wash my cats cage with only water( so i basically only rinse it) well today I washed it with "Doctor Mechanic" and when it was done drying though out the day i got it back inside the house and when my cat was about to get inside when he just froze and stood low and still. I saw him and called out to him and he wouldn't move nor respond like he always does. when i reach out and touch him he goes berserk and scratches me and starts jumping everywhere. now he won't walk around the house even though i took his cage outside. what can I do about this problem??
