How to break up with someone without hurting them?

Well, my bf and i have been through so much and for some reason, i dont feel that connection anymore. he always says "ily and always will" or im-ing me whenever i get online. it just seems, annoying? it feels like hes trying to hard to be good bf and i understand that but.. anyways just help me on this. thanks.
